My passion for tertiary education has provided opportunities to take leading roles in university-wide transformation in course design, education technology strategy, learning space development, pedagogical renewal, and learning analytics.

I directly support the Vice Provost Learning and Teaching in developing and implementing strategies that impact all faculties across the university as part of the Better Teaching, Better Learning agenda. I lead the Education Technology Roadmap, providing an integrated suite of educational technologies for educators across the university. I provide academic leadership in the design of learning spaces, in particular in the design of the Learning and Teaching Building at Monash University.

I lead teaching in units with large classes, typically in excess of 300 students. I’m known Internationally for my highly interactive approach, combined with my use of technology, to engage large audiences.

9:10 AM CASE STUDY: A Framework to Measure Success: Aligning the Impact of Learning Spaces with Cultural Change

When analysing the impact of new learning spaces, a significant challenge is presented to separate the space itself from the expertise of academics and students inhabiting the space as a driver of improved learning outcomes. Kris Ryan explores a framework implemented to consider the new Learning and Teaching Building at Monash University and its impact to learning and teaching across multiple disciplines.
This case study will consider

  • The establishment of an agreed purpose of new learning spaces and identifying success criteria
  • The identification of six broad metrics that measure success of formal study opportunities: student feedback, academic success, opportunities for authentic assessment, student resilience, student engagement, and academic opportunities.
  • The impact of formal and informal space utilisation, with particular consideration of student background.
